Punamu’kwati’jk, Dartmouth artist Barbara Lounder presents, Family Gathering/Gathering Family.
Family Gathering/Gathering Family is formed by works on paper and assemblage sculptures forming a visual narrative regarding her maternal family background. This genealogical narrative is embedded within larger histories of land acquisition, colonization, enslavement and resource extraction. The artist recalls her Rudderham family members, their gatherings, handed-down stories and treasured keepsakes (such as her grandmother’s set of China dishes) with warm affection and respect, while endeavouring to understand the difficult histories of past and present.
