Island in the Sun is an ode to Cape Breton summers and the people who risk it all for some rays. Wadden spent five summers documenting burns, tans and still life that lean into absurdity, throwing caution to the wind and chasing down sun chasers.
‘I read an interview with Gordon Parks in PDN over 20-years ago where he talked about making his own happiness a priority after a lifetime of social activism behind the lens. The idea of exploring a body of work purely for entertainment made a lot of sense to me but why wait? Why not have some fun along the way? In Park’s case, it was artistic nudes. In my case, with Island in the Sun, it’s been sun worshippers and hotdogs on the ground” says photographer, Steve Wadden.
