Rituals of Belonging is an ongoing series of artist multiples by Myung-Sun Kim. These objects, accompanied by rituals from various contributors, function as a container for time and space, holding conversations and connections. The patterns on the ceramic work reference beeswax tessellation as a metaphor to think about systems, lineage and kinship. Playful interventions into the pattern disrupt its uniform structure and create new images and formation of meaning. Visitors to the exhibition are invited to contribute their own rituals, offering forward to future visitors, connecting across time and space.
Myung-Sun Kim’s work explores questions of belonging, inheritance, silenced histories, foodways, kinship, queerness, rituals and lineage. Her current research explores the function of art/objects as communal heirlooms and how daily rituals of belonging can further shape our culture and relationships. She has presented her work across North America and in Finland, including Art Gallery of Ontario, MOCA Toronto, FADO Performance Art Centre, and Plug In ICA. She has designed and facilitated various forms of creative residencies across Canada and is one of the co-organizers of Curatorium, an international collective of curatorial and creative practitioners.
