October 20, 2022
Opening Reception and Artist Talk on the 20th from 6-8pm.
Jude Griebel’s Broken Pattern presents four sculptures and multiple framed drawings. These works explore human impact on the world, by merging anatomies and landscapes into single sculptural forms. The works provide new and fantastic understandings of eco-anxiety and speculate on possibilities beyond planetary collapse. They visualize rampant cycles of human consumption and the resulting detriment to both the human self and surrounding world. This exhibition is especially timely as just weeks ago, the eastern coastal communities of Unama’ki, Cape Breton Island, experienced one of the most disruptive weather events in decades. Coined a ‘once in a generation storm,’ Hurricane Fiona blew over the Island in a rage of wind and rain, displacing residents from their homes, downing power lines, uprooting thousands of elder trees, and leaving some communities in the dark for over fifteen long days, reminding us that climate change is not an abstract concept, but here and now.
